Tsonga lobola (ndzovolo / xidulu): costs and customs

Tsonga ndzovolo sits between the Nguni and Sotho baselines at around seven cattle, and is characteristically settled as a combination of cattle and cash. Among Tsonga families in Gauteng, the bride's education is becoming one of the more influential factors.

At a glance. Tsonga lobola is called Ndzovolo / Xidulu in Xitsonga. It starts from a base of 7 cattle, before adjustments for the bride's education, her employment, her family's standing, and any children from a previous relationship.

Seven cattle, usually part cash

Seven is the working base for ndzovolo — above Sotho bohadi and Venda thagu, below Xhosa iLobola and well below the Zulu standard.

Cattle-and-cash settlement is the norm rather than the exception. Families commonly agree a number of cattle, keep one or two live for the ceremony, and convert the remainder at an agreed price per head.

Education is increasingly influential

Tsonga negotiations have historically weighted family standing and conduct heavily, but among the large Tsonga community in Gauteng the bride's qualifications now come up early and often.

A degree adds around one beast, honours or a master's two, and a doctorate or professional qualification three. Business ownership scores above salaried professional employment, as it does in every tradition here.

Family standing adds about one beast for a respected or well-known family and two for a prominent one — a narrower swing than in Xhosa iLobola.

How the negotiation runs

The groom's family sends senior male relatives with a letter introducing the family and requesting a meeting, with no amount stated. The bride's family sets the date and venue.

Discussion is generally direct and practical, and Tsonga negotiations are often shorter than Nguni ones — though two meetings remain more common than one. The cattle-to-cash conversion is usually settled in the same conversation as the cattle count.

Settlement is celebrated with food and prayer, and followed by the gift ceremony for the bride's family.

Practical notes

Because ndzovolo is so often part cash, agreeing the price per head in advance matters more here than almost anywhere. Limpopo and Mpumalanga prices differ by around R1,500 a head, and families split across both provinces should settle which figure applies before converting.

Write down the cattle count, the number kept live, the conversion rate and the payment schedule, and have both family heads sign it.

Tsonga lobola — frequently asked

How much is Tsonga lobola in 2026?
Ndzovolo, also called xidulu, starts from a base of 7 cattle. At Limpopo prices of roughly R10,000 per head that is about R70,000 before adjustments, and around R80,500 in Mpumalanga where cattle run nearer R11,500. Education and family standing can add three or more cattle on top.
What is the difference between ndzovolo and xidulu?
Both terms are used in Xitsonga for the lobola given to the bride's family. Usage varies by area and family; the practice being described is the same.
Is Tsonga lobola paid in cattle or cash?
Usually both. The standard arrangement is to negotiate a number of cattle, keep one or two live for the ceremony, and convert the rest to cash at a price per head agreed in advance. Settle that conversion rate before converting — Limpopo and Mpumalanga prices differ by about R1,500 a head.
